OCTOBER UPDATE - Extremely Functional Spooky Update

Hey everyone,

Once again, a bit later than I would have liked on this one. I came down with an illness in early October which ended up fully knocking me out of action for a couple of weeks! Not ideal! Thankfully, I’m now back on the horse and ready to get this finished!

Due to a couple of minor delays on the last few behind-the-scenes bits that still needed doing, I haven’t yet been able to send off the order for the final print run. Thankfully, things are now moving again, and with some luck I should be able to send the final document to the printers in the next couple of days.
Whilst the document is at the printers, I’ll be focusing on getting distribution for the digital copy of the zine and soundtrack album sorted. Expect more updates on that front soon.

Orders have now been locked and cards charged for delivery! Delivery addresses will be locked once the print run arrives at my place. I’ll give everyone a heads up as to when that is - from then, you’ll have another 48 hours before we lock things down for good to get orders sent out. We'll send out an email reminder as well.

If for any reason you haven’t been able to lock your orders or charge cards for delivery,  please feel free to get in touch with me via message on Kickstarter, or by email at [email protected]. I want to make sure everyone gets their reward!

That’s pretty much it for today! Wanted to keep things concise as I know I’ve been bad at keeping y’all in the loop. The end is in sight!

Until next time,

September Update! ORDER LOCK DATE! TEST PRINTS!

September Update! ORDER LOCK DATE! TEST PRINTS!

Hey folks! It’s (finally) time for this month’s update! This is later than I would have liked to get it out, but unfortunately the move ended up eating the past couple of weeks pretty heavily! Thankfully, I am now nicely settled and ready to get to the business of getting this zine finished off! Speaking of which…

Earlier this week the test print for the zine arrived! You can see some pictures of the zine below!

test print pics!

Barring minor mistakes (I somehow managed to forget to add page numbers to one of the master spreads) and a few modifications to account for printing errors, I’m very happy with how the print came out! I’ll be fixing these issues over the next week or so in order to meet a tentative early October print date! PDF copies will also be distributed around this time!

As we’re nearing completion, I can now confirm that orders will lock on the 28th September! After this point you won’t be able to make any changes to your order, though you will still be able to update your shipping address.
A reminder to those of you who haven’t yet filled in your BackerKit surveys - please do so!
If you backed for a physical copy of the zine, you won’t receive said zine if you don’t!
If you haven’t received an email, please get in touch with us!

Delivery fees and any add-ons will be charged to cards on the 1st October.

In other news, the soundtrack is now complete! Molly is now in the process of final masters ahead of release. Everyone who backed the Kickstarter should a digital copy of the album on Bandcamp, distributed via email early next month! The album will remain available to purchase on Bandcamp. I'm incredibly proud that I've been able to contribute to this project, and I'm super excited for the world at large to hear it! In the meantime, we thought we'd share the album art!

album art!

Before I leave you, I thought I'd share some pictures of my new place, so you can see where the magic happens! All of my new housemates are actual angels, and I'm settling in nicely, which is frankly a huge relief after the stress of the last month!

new digs!

That's all for today! I'm aiming to have the next update actually come out on time (early October), so y'all should hear from me soon!

Until next time,

August Update! Backerkit Surveys! Art!
almost 4 years ago – Wed, Aug 03, 2022 at 01:29:58 PM

August Update!

Hey folks! It’s time for another update, and this month it’s a big one!

Layout

A perfect storm of illness, commitments to other projects, and the hottest weather on record in the UK combined to mean that my work on the layout has been put on the backburner this month. Fortunately, we are still very much on schedule - barring various final tweaks, I’m largely waiting on Conner’s finished art at this point. Speaking of which…

Art

Conner sent me a progress report on how the art is coming along! Speaking personally, I am incredibly happy with how these pieces came out, and am excited for the finished art to be added to the layouts! The pieces you see here aren’t *final*, but are unlikely to change dramatically between now and publication!

Illustration of a bandstand, overgrown with vines.
One of Conner's pieces!
The burnt out husk of a pier in tranquil waters. Birds fly above.
And another one!

Shipping and Backerkit

Whilst a small number of you will have already received them , the vast majority of backers will be receiving the links to your Backerkit surveys today! With these, you’ll be able to enter your shipping details, as well as amend your pledge, or purchase additional copies of the zine if you wish. You’ll be able to amend your shipping details up until the end of September. We’ll give you a reminder as that approaches.

Music

I’m continuing to work in collaboration with Molly behind the scenes, and the soundtrack is really shaping up! In particular, I’m very happy with how the Walk tracks have afforded an opportunity to incorporate a bit of variety in terms of musical style! We’ve got 80s pop, sad indie vibes and and some just *fucked up* electronic music, and it all slaps! Very excited for people to hear the finished album!

Pack up and move out

In other news, I’ll be moving house at the end of the month. After three years at my current address, it’s finally time for a change of scenery! Moving is always stressful, so fingers crossed things will go as smoothly as possible… Depending on how this goes, there’s a chance that the next update may be slightly delayed - I’ll let you know you if that’s the case!

That’s all for now. As usual, we’ll keep you updated if anything changes! Until next time

July Update! <kronk voice> Oh yeah, it's all coming together.
almost 4 years ago – Mon, Jul 11, 2022 at 03:20:07 AM

New month, new update!

Hey everyone! Just getting you up to speed on where we're at!

Layouts for the zine are largely finished!  Barring a few more graphic elements I need to create, the layouts for the zine are approaching completion! It's been incredibly satisfying taking the finished text and dropping it into the document!

Whilst I've been working on getting the layouts up to scratch, our amazing guest writers have finished their contributions! Having other writers working concurrently on the project has been super informative for my own design process, and I can't wait for you to play with what they've made! You can find one of Chloe's Guest Walks below!

Some more admin-y bits now! Backers at The Guide tier should check their emails for the backer survey for y'all to submit your names for the Walk picklists! As we're approaching the point in the project where I can start thinking about printing, I'll be working on getting BackerKit page handling postage up in the next week or so - keep an eye out for that!

That's all for this month! As a final treat, you can find a link to one of the songs from the soundtrack album by Molly below (not final)!

'Til next time

June Update! It’s Pride Month Baybeeee!
about 4 years ago – Fri, Jun 03, 2022 at 12:09:35 AM

It's June! PRIDE MONTH IS HERE!

Hey everyone! It’s time for this month’s update! By and large, things are still chugging along behind the scenes. Due to other commitments I haven’t gotten as much done as I would have liked over the last couple of weeks, but we are still very much on course to meet our planned schedule!

To celebrate the start of Pride, I want to try something a little different with the update this month. Without further ado, I thought I ‘d take the time to talk a little about queer themes in The Fall of Home!

When you get down to brass tacks, I wrote The Fall of Home in an attempt to capture how I felt when I moved away from home to go to university. As a result, it’s equal parts a coming-of-age and a coming out story.

For some context, I realised I was trans towards the end of my first year of uni. I suppose in a way I had known for a lot longer, but up until this point lack of knowledge about and general stigma around trans issues meant that I never really entertained the idea that such a thing was possible for me. Long story short, after a difficult first year I found myself newly out and back at home for the summer holidays.

That summer was weird to say the least. I’d grown up in Bournemouth and lived there for the vast majority of my life, but now I found that the place I’d once thought of as home felt distinctly different - alien, even. The funny thing about transition (at least for me) was that the realisation that on some level I was a fundamentally different person to who I thought I was recontextualised vast swathes of my early life, to the point that for a long time it felt like the past me was an entirely different person, which, in a way, I suppose I was.

The Fall of Home is a game about that feeling; the way a place can all at once be intimately familiar and devastatingly different. Several of the walks represent attempts at approaching this from different perspectives.

The Fledgeling is broadly modelled on the me that existed in that halfway state, returning to their hometown having found themselves in an alternate reality. On the other hand, The Academic is a look at that same person five years on, in line with how my feelings towards home have changed in that time.. Other walks, in particular The Estranged and The Ravenous, are an attempt to leave room for other marginalised identities to tell their own story.

I hope that when you get to play it, you can find something in The Fall of Home that speaks to you.

That’s all for today! Next month should be a more substantial update, with some finalised layouts, more content from our guest writers, and if you’re lucky perhaps even a song or two!
Happy Pride month!
